What is Guru Mahima?

Guru Mahima is one section of our Upasana, and it is sung in the morning (Praatah-Kaal) at the very end. Pujya Shree Narandasji Maharajshree composed the Guru Mahima with the utmost bhaav of SAMPURN SAMARPAN (complete and total surrender) to Paramguru Shreemat Karunasagar Maharaj. This 140 verse prathna, which can sometimes become a verbal maze of sorts, has depth and substance beyond our complete comprehension. While to us it might seem like the verses are short, each word was carefully selected by Shree Narandasji Maharaj in such a particular and precise manner.

In this prathna, Shree Narandasji Maharaj emphasizes the importance of a true ‘Sad-Guru’ as he gives special attention to Paramguru (of course!) as he describes where true happiness can be found and how only Paramguru has the power and divinity to take us there. With meaningful examples and constant reinforcement, he takes us on a journey that will help us self-reflect on our own faith and devotion as we learn the meanings behind each verse.

The word ‘Guru’ means teacher but in this context, it means ‘Spiritual Teacher’, one who awakens our spiritual senses, gives us dharmic gyan and helps us reach self-actualization. The word ‘Mahima’ can be translated to importance but the word itself has greater weight when we actually understand the Sanskrit origins. More about that later.

Our Pujya Guru, Acharya Shree Avichaldasji Maharajshree has said that this Guru Mahima has be composed with so much divinity and knowledge that if we just understand the meanings behind it and sing it niyamit (everyday), we could unfold unquantifiable bhakti, gyan and vairag within our own selves. He says, only Pujya Shree Narandasji Maharaj could have done this, for he was the closest to Paramguru.

Because of its length, content and overall meaning, we decided to omit Guru Mahima from our first Upasana translation series and instead decided to make Guru Mahima its own series. SO, Kaival satsangis, we are back with some serious Gyan for all of you and we are BLESSED that Paramguru has given us this humbled opportunity to bring you this unparalleled knowledge.
